Way too long between posts

Sorry to have been away so long for those of you who have continued to check the blog, and I know there are some of you.

Alan continues to work hard on his duties in Court and on the campaign. Next week, he'll be doing radio interviews on State Government Radio, several stations in Wilmington, and a state-wide talk show.

I hope you have heard some of our radio ads which have been rolled out this week. In Raleigh, you can hear them on Foxy 97. Links to the ads will be put on the website as soon as our hosting company makes the capability available.

Endorsements have been rolling in: The Charlotte Observer, the Raleigh-Wake Citizens Association, and The Charlotte Mecklenburg Black Political Caucus have joined the likes of Governor Jim Hunt, The NC AFL-CIO, Dr. Julius Chambers, and Former Chief Justices Henry Frye and Burley Mitchell in supporting Thornburg for Court of Appeals.

You can add "new dad" to judge and candidate on Alan Thornburg's rapidly growing list of responsibilities.

Sarah Frances "Sally" Thornburg arrived at 5:26 p.m. on Friday, June 18. She is 7 lbs, 11 oz, 20 1/2 inches long, and has all of her fingers and toes. Mama, Daddy, big brother Sam, and baby Sally are all doing well!

Busy Weekend

This paast weekend was a busy one for the Thornburg Campaign. After a full week in Raleigh, Alan returned to Asheville to be with Sarah and to meet with supporters in the Buncombe County area. Since no baby arrived, Alan was able to attend the N.C. Committee of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund banquet in Charlotte on Saturday night. Alan enjoyed meeting and talking with chairman Franklin McCain and the honorees, all of whom helped move Charlotte and the state forward towards integration in the schools and the courts. Among the honorees was one of Alan's predecessors on the Court of Appeals, Judge Clifton Johnson, the first African-American to serve as an Associate Justice on the Court of Appeals.

I had the pleasure to be in Sunset Beach, North Carolina, where I attended many of the functions of the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers on Alan's behalf. Chris Nichols organized an excellent series of seminars and social events. It was a pleasure to meet with many of the current members of the bench as well as the trial lawyers. Thanks to all of you who gave us your support and encouragement. I will be calling on you! Alan is now at the convention and I have returned to work.

We'll have more posting from now until the primary on July 20. The word is starting to get out about this race, and we're ready to win!

Thornblog gets a mention on WUNC!!!

Ed Cone, the North Carolina blogfather, was on WUNC last night, in a discussion about blogging which should have been longer, and mentioned that Judge Thornburg has a blog. WUNC hasn't put up the link yet, but we've asked them to do so. Email them at sot@wunc.org and ask them to link to us.

Ed, thanks for the mention. Much obliged. David Hoggard at Hogg's Blog has a link that claims to play the audio stream of the show, but I haven't been able to get it to work. Maybe those of you not behind a firewall can figure it out.

In other news, the arrival of baby Thornburg is imminent, as in any day now. I'm sure Sarah and Alan will let us all know when the blessed event arrives. Good luck!

Everette Case, a rising sophomore at Dickinson College, and a proud product of the City of Raleigh, has joined the campaign as a summer intern.

Obviously, posting has not been coming as quickly as I would like, but we're getting there. The Judge is traveling today, and has a number of interesting events coming up. We have a picnic in Sylva this evening, and I will be at the Wake Dems picnic at the State Fairgrounds this afternoon. If you're around, come out and pick up some information on the judge.

Soon, we'll be at the Academy of Trial Lawyers convention and the NC Bar Association Annual Meeting.

And oh yeah, there's that matter of a full caseload for the Judge to hear. That work never slows down.

I hope to see you in Raleigh this afternoon.

Memorial Day

This weekend, enjoy your family and friends, and travel safely. Please take some time during this holiday to remember those who have paid with their lives for our freedom. Countless selfless acts of heroism and sacrifice allow us to enjoy the lives we live today.

Thank a Veteran who came home, and remember those who did not.

I'm going to start with Ed, as good an advocate for the importance of blogging as there is working today, and Eric Muller, a law professor over at UNC, as well as the highly intelligent and thoughtful Professor Lawrence Lessig.

Welcome to ThornBlog. This site represents a new idea in judicial campaigning in North Carolina. Alan Thornburg was appointed to the Court of Appeals by Governor Easley in February, to fill the seat of the retiring Chief Judge Sidney Eagles, who had served his State with distinction. Now Alan has to run to keep his seat in November, and to do that, he has to get past the primary on July 20.

This site has been set up to inform and learn. It's a give and take. Blogging is the new grassroots campaigning, and this campaign is going to show that it can work in judicial campaigns, too.

I'm John Burns. I'm the campaign manager for The Judge Thornburg Committee. I'm also the host of this blog. We're going to talk a lot this year. This site gives you a place to sound off, to question, to give us your ideas, and to read what Alan has to say. Alan can't meet everyone in the state, no matter how hard he tries, but this blog should help him get a little closer.

Plus, how cool is that name? Thornblog.
